Tunisia applies to EU to secure funding for “ELMED” project
Tunisia has applied to the European Union for a grant to finance the project of electrical interconnection between Tunisia and Italy, called “ELMED”, under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), said the Director General of Electricity and Energy Transition at the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, Belhassen Chiboub.
Speaking to TAP, on the closing of the third training session for journalists on effective communication techniques, held from October 11 to 14, 2022, he added that this project whose investment cost is €800 million will be operational in 2027. It will achieve a high-voltage submarine interconnection of 200 km, which will link Tunisia and Italy.
“ELMED” is also part of a Euro-Mediterranean power grid linking Europe and North African countries and provides for implementing a 600MW high voltage submarine DC cable between Tunisia (Cap Bon) and Italy (Sicily), “he pointed out.
He said this project, once completed, will allow Tunisia to ensure its energy needs and export the surplus to the European market.
In addition, Chiboub recalled that the World Bank (WB), on September 13, 2018, had granted Tunisia 12.5 million dollars to ensure the financing of technical studies relating to the “ELMED” project.
Organised by that The Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy (MIME) jointly with the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG), the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME) and the GIZ, the third training session for journalists is part of the training cycle “Journalist: Partner for a Citizen Energy Transition in Tunisia”.
